Calendar Systems

Most people are familiar with the concept of the modern western calendar system. Which is a rough - arsed division of 12 months into 28, 29, 30 or 31 days, and a decimal number for the year, based upon the supposed birth of a mythical figure or demigod. There are however several other calendars which exist or have existed in the past, and here follows a quick summary of them.

The Babylonian Calendar

No information yet but started on 749 BCE

The Chinese Calendar

This calendar started way back in ancient history, at a very rare astronomical alignment, on 5th March 1954 BCE when the sun and new moon aligned with the conjunction of Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn in the constellation of pegasus.

The Egyptian Calendar

Began when the Sun and Sirius rose in the same place, but we are not entirely sure if it was :-
4241, 4168 or 1141 BCE

The French Revolutionary Calendar

Used in France, and marking the start of the first French Republic on the Autumnal Equinox on Saturday 22nd September 1792

The Hindu Calendar

The Calendar Reform Committee established this one in 21st March 79 AD

The Indonesian Calendar

Sultan Agung Hanyokrokosumo decreed the start of this calendar. 79 AD

The Islamic Calendar

Begins with the flight of the prophet Hijri. 16th July 622

The Hebrew Calendar

Used by all Jewish people. The creation of the world by God in September 3761 BC

The Mayan Calendar

Some ancient event or unknown astronomical event might have begun the start of the first great cycle, we just don't know. The Mayans didn't use decimal counting, but the start date was 3114 BCE

The Poundian Calendar

This is based upon the western calendar, but starting at the finish date of the novel Ulysses, by James Joyce, which by sacriligious inference marks the end of Christian era. This date in western calendar was Tuesday 1st November 1921. Esra Pound designed this system and it is now known as the Poundian Calendar.

The Russian Calendar

The Russian year began at the Creation Of The World 1st March 5509 BCE, this calendar lasted until the end of the 15th century. And later they fell into line with the Gregorian calendar, used by the rest of Europe.

The Thelemic Calendar

The calendar of Aleister Crowley starts on the day he concieved his meisterwork  " The book of the law ". And by his proclamation, the New Aeon of Horus, Sunday 12th March 1904

The Tibetan Calendar

Begginning with the enlightenment of the Buddah, on a total eclipse of the moon, 2134 BCE

The above dates are all based upon the year starting on January 1st, which it doesn't for some of course, some start on March 1st, and some rely on the Moon
