The Paragon

The Paragon
Firth Park, Sheffield

The Paragon opened in 1934.

It was the first Cinema in Sheffield to be designed and built for Sound
It also had a Forty Foot wide proscenum which made it ideal later, for wide screen films
and seating for 1300

It was demolished after it's last film on wednesday 28th Feb 1962

the site is now occupied with a Bowling alley and a supermarket

Many thanks to Robin Brown for the old Photo ( circa 1948 )
Robin worked his way up from Rewind boy to Chief Projectionist in his Paragon Years between 1948 and 1954
he remarks that the small windows at the top were the Projection Room
and the larger windows underneath the P A R A G O N sign, were the Lounge

Robin has Just unearthed this negative, which he has printed for me. It was taken in 1948

You can see the two shop units on this shot, the left hand one was used for cinema publicity and the right hand one was a Ladies hairdressers.

Later on either 1949 or 1950, the left hand shop unit operated as a tea and snacks shop, by the Manager's wife

The manager at this time was Mr. Richard Watling
