The Landsowne Picture Palace 1999
The Lansdowne Picture Palace

London Road, Built 1914 With 1500 Seats

Must have shown silent movies, because talkies weren't even invented for another nine years.

Closed in 1940, as a Cinema, because of
Bomb Damage During The War

The tower in the corner which contained the old ventilation fan, was originally styled as a chinese pagoda. On the ground floor it was open and acted as a shelter. The painted facade hides a wonderful terrocotta facing and stained glass windows. Notice the urns on the top!

In the last week of Feb 2000, the work started again on this building, painting it black and rigging up new signwork and posters.

This Cinema is now BED
an all night nightclub run by the Gatecrasher organisation

Arguably painting it black has ruined the building's character

March 2000

New September 2005

After a few years as Bed night club, this old building finally comes to the end of it's life. It seems that the sewage system couldn't cope with the hundreds of people who frequented the nightclub every week and it was cheaper to demolish than repair the sewers. As you can see from this group, the rear half of the building has been removed while preserving the historic facade. The rear half was little more than a warehouse, and as far as I was aware, had little historic interest as the building had had so many uses, there couldn't have been much left from the cinema days.

From behind, the whole back of the building which was the Cinema has now been demolished, and you can see the back of the facade which will hopefully be preserved in the new development.

From the right hand side of the facade of the Cinema, you can see the hordings advertising "The Forge" which is the new apartment development which is rapidly rising in the background.

The Adelphi

The Adelphi
Vicarage Road, Attercliffe

This building is currently for sale and externally in magnificent condition.

It is also listed by English Heritage.
Was operating as Adelphi Bingo Club in the late sixties, and more recently as a nightclub

Latest news March 25th 2000, the adelphi is to be opened as a Community Enterprise Centre and Club thanks to a mystery donation of £160,000.
It will be a base for aspiring bands, promoters, DJs, artists, designers and technicians to aquire professional skills. And a branch of the Darnall Music Factory
