The City of Sheffield enjoys hundreds of glittering delights. Apart from the Sheffield Simplex Car and Marti Caine we also have a remarkable number of shops which have names that are comic puns. Indeed, driving around Sheffield can be a little like the grim torture of being stuck in the house on a rainy boxing day with no booze, an endless supply of turkey sandwiches and a lifetime of christmas cracker jokes, each one just a shade less funny than the last.

Anyhow, enough of my riveting banter, here is a selection of the unforgivable shop signs...

British Hairways - 987 Abbeydale Road, Millhouses, Sheffield

British Hairways

Codrophenia - Walkley, Sheffield

Exchange & Smart - Walkley, Sheffield

I really love this one "Exchange an Smart". The only clue that the picture isn't taken back in 1960s or 1970s is the mobile phone number on the card in the window.

Wok This Way - Howard Road, Walkley, Sheffield

New Cod On The Block - Walkley, Sheffield

By now you will probably have already noticed that a pattern is emerging. It doesn't take the mental brilliance and acute alertness of a real life Miss Marple to have worked out that the vast bulk of these stupidly named shops are either chip shops or hair dressers. What is it with these people ?

Chick King - London Road, Highfields, Sheffield

One remarkable thing about this frontage as far as I am concerned, is what is the point of a fire hydrant sign if it is hidden 12 feet up a building on the first floor where nobody would ever find it.

Nutt Case Hair Salon - Handsworth, Sheffield

Beauty Spot - Ecclesall Road

Jimmy's Plaice - Ecclesall Road, Sheffield

Edge Cutters - Sheldon Road, Nether Edge, Sheffield

Scuba Duba - Nether Edge Road, Nether Edge, Sheffield

Antics - Ecclesall Road, Sheffield

If all this has left you practically unable to breathe because you are laughing so much, then you had better go and lie down for several minutes. Later on you might like to visit one of my other hilarious web pages which are designed for general amusement and harmless fun such as my campaign to ban caravans, my tribute to the hilarious asides of HRH Prince Phillip or my spoof of a westcountry local newspaper.
