[ Back To The Wookie MAIN HOMEPAGE ] [ To Pub Index ]

This old pub, takes it's name from the road which emerges opposite, Broadfield Road.

It was built around 1896 by Albert Twigg.
His son William, coined the phrase "Odd Life Bar", which is simply an anagram of Broadfield.

The Origin Of The Name Broadfield
The only building in the area (mid 1700s) was at the opposite end of Broadfield road, about where Saxon Road Now emerges. It was a house called Broadfield and it had several fields. This gave its name to the adjacent road, which became Broadfield park road.
Until the begginning of the 20th century, the middle section of the current broadfield road was not there, the sheaf river crossed it twice and the middle was undeveloped. Later the river was diverted to the current channel and the road was joined right through, Heeley Swimming Baths was built, and the southern section of the road was changed from Rufford Road to Broadfield Road.
Interestingly, the Broadfield hotel was built when the southern end of Broadfield Road was still called Rufford Road.

Fortunately over a century on, and now simply "The Broadfield", this now extended pub, is a busy and vibrant fixture in the South Sheffield pub scene. This area is very popular with students, and in addition is the only pub on Abbeydale road for 1/2 a mile to the north (The Royal) and 1 mile to the south (The Millhouses), which is strange in such a densley populated area.

Regular gigs, DJ's and sound systems feature, on the busy schedule of this pub. The Extension which is now Named the Odd Life Bar, has pool tables and a table football table. The small car park at the back doubles as a beer garden in the summer.

The Broadfield April 2003

Just had a lick of paint in the last few weeks

Looks Pretty good now, will probably look much duller and a bit mucky after a few months of traffic smog.

Looks like the Odd Life Bar has changed it's name to Games Bar, probably be full of teenagers!
