The Cathedral Zone

Anglican Cathedral

Updates 10th & 23rd of March 2008

The area around the two cathedrals and orchard square, a mixture of old pubs, new bars in re-used buildings, and re-vamped pubs with new trendy names. A large and disparate area which is better known as a shopping area, but there are some interesting and quirky new bars that have been established in the 1990's

The Old Monk
Previously The Fraternity House

But before that a branch of T.S.B.

Has modern classy interior with lots of varnished wood finish.

The Brown Bear
109 Norfolk Street

This pub Is 175 years old and has a good range of real ales.

A remarkably origional pub in the middle of town, And long may it stay that way.

The Beer Garden at the back of the Brown Bear featured a number of colourful murals.
The Mulberry Tavern
Arundel Gate
1st October 2000

This pub was rebuilt into a large block
which extends from Norfolk Street
to High Street. I suspect that the arched
windows were saved from the origional
pub of 1825, certainly the style, if not the
actual stone and pillars

The pub has stood empty from around 2002.

This Pub Is Called The HOGSHEAD
Previously called The Orchard

But This House Has Been Here Since 1797
And For Most Of It's 203 years
Called THE MUSEUM

Although the only part which was the original pub is the front wall, the internals and layout of the rest of the building date from the building of orchard square.

As you can see below, now returned to the original name The Museum - 23rd March 2008

All Bar One - September 2000

TP  Woods & Co - September 2000

And in 23rd March 2008 - renamed the Fountain

The Stonehouse
September 2000

205 Years Old

In 2007 this vintage pub closed for the last time and in 2008 the premises is in the process of being redeveloped into an extension of the cheap clothes shop next door.

The Golden Ball
Campo Lane - Dec 1999

This Pub became BAR 8, a pub with regular local bands on a small stage at the back of the venue
