Encompassing the West street and Devonshire Green Areas, these areas have many extra bars, which have been developed over the past decade. This area is so popular that many young people from Chestesterfield, Rotherham and Barnsley boost the numbers every Friday and Saturday Night.
In addition there are many students living in the heart of this area, especially with the far end of this area being in the heart of Sheffield Unitversity, a new university building seems to be put up every year, gradually taking over the old derelict patches, that used to blight the district. This has led to swanky 24 hour convenience shops and new facilities, giving the area an up to date, alive feel that it has always lacked. The Devonshire green area is now a swinging place to be. There Are regular events, markets and music festivals on the green, and you can turn up some unbelieveable clothes and gadgets in the forum shops.
The area is purposefully long, starting at the Hallamshire hospital, and finishing at the edge of the heart of town, in barkers pool. There are many pubs and bars for all tastes in this busy mile.
Pubs/Bars are listed in wookatastical order.
Flares, West Street - Dec 1999 |
O'Hagan's, Fitzwilliam Street - Dec 1999 |

This corner was occupied by "The Albert" pub which was opened in 1797 and demolished in the 1970s. It was reported to be a miserable little pub with not much to reccomend it. The pub was demolished because it was an unsafe building and not worth restoring. For a couple of decades the land remained as a surface car park, with the adjacent tired looking shops standing folorn, until they were finally demolished for this new development in the 1990s |

The
Walkabout held it's opening party on 16th December 1999, It is a fantastic
venue with a fantastic sound system, balcony and church fixtures and fittings.
A sports southern hemisphere bar, there are 26 televisions, all showing
sport, there are even even t.v.'s in the toilets. The biggest t.v. is a
24ft wide projection tv. They show no premiership football, only rugby,
cricket and other Aussie sports, " lovely "... They sell Kangaroo,
and Crocodile Steak too if you're feeling peckish. And they have D.J.s
on at weekends and live bands 3 times a week.
Hanrahans has been a very posh place
to drink since 1984, often frequented by professional footballers, and
other relatively famous people. This place is known for it's cocktails,
the
variety, manufacture and presentation are all a fantastic treat. They always
utilise a large range of glasses, garnish and styles.
The
only problem is that once you have been to Hanrahans, and drunk
cocktail, then you are spoiled, and no other brand of cocktail is ever
as good. The bartenders in other places are amateurs in comparison, they
are never as smart, and there is never as large a display of spirit ingredients
on display.
They do sell beer at Hanrahans, but you would be a miserable so-and-so if you drunk it in preference to cocktail. Remember to go at happy hour, 6 - 7 pm, for the half price drinks!
Always a fantastic venue to start drinking... Especially if a reasonable session is planned for the evening.
From April 2008 the venue was relaunched as Loch Fyne part of a national chain of seafood restaurants, no more cocktail nights then..
Soul Kitchen / Bar 8, at 8 - 10 Fitzwilliam Street. the former tin pan alley venue, is named after a song by the Doors. The Soul Kitchen bit is the food side and Bar 8, the drinks. They served food from 8 am in the morning, right through to 8 at night and the menu evolved throughout the day, this venue was demolished as part of the west one development and the position is currently occupied by part of the Revolution bar.
Halcyon
is a very old house. It was formerly the City Residence of The Duke of
Devonshire, A local Rich landowner. The whole street was named after him
and this, His house. The place is a towny type of bar these days, always
full, and very often a D.J. mixing his wares into the night.
Now with late night hours, this bar is open
until 1am Monday to Saturday,
The Halcyon is now called The Old House
The Red Deer has it's own website,
very interesting and informative. www.red-deer-sheffield.co.uk/
There is lots of pictures, and information
about the beers and food on sale, and lots of reference to the pub's open
fires. The pub has no gambling machines! and long may this tradition remain.

The Swim Inn This wetherspoons pub is open in the former Glossop Road Baths, a public swimming pool which was closed down in the 1990s. |
|---|
Bar S1 March 2008 This is the current reincarnation of the Bee Hive Hotel on west street. In the 1990s the premises doubled in size to consume the post office on the left hand side when it was open as the Foundry and Firkin. |

The Cavendish - 220 to 238 West Street March 2008 |
The Cavendish was opened in the mid 1990s in a building which was kennings car hire for many years. A very popular studenty pub, the upper floors were converted into apartments at the same time, although it is a pity they removed the original leaded windows which gave the building such character. |

Lava Lounge March 2008
This bar was previously a bicycle shop It was listed as "Freewheel" in 1999 Then By 2003 it had become V - Bar |

West Street Live March 2008 Is now a well established live venue. They have a band on every night and bookings for weeks in advance. There is a great atmosphere inside and this pub has finally come into it's own after lots of different guises over the last 20 years, as 70s bar, In 2003 it was named the 80s Music Bar. |

Here in 1999, the same pub was called Flares and it was a kind of cheesey 1970s bar Originally the pub was called "the West Street" |

This fake oirish pub (O'Hagan's) was the final version of what was for many years the Hornblower. It was taken in 1999 and demolished soon after to make room for the enormous West One development. Revolution bar below is now in the space where the Hornblower was. The old door being close to the front of the red car. Before moving here, this branch of Revolution was across West Street on Mappin street in the building where Bai|Hoi is now |

The Forum - A bar and complex of shops. In recent times the road at the side of the Forum was closed off and the bar was extended onto it in a conservatory, as you can see above. Many residents of Sheffield rightly thought this to be an incredible liberty! You can still see the road sign above the new extension's roof.
Old House, Previously Halcyon, but this building was originally the town residence of the Duke of Devonshire.
Olive bar and resteraunt.. This premises has had several names over the last 3 decades. It orignally looked like a traditional pub and right through to the mid 1990s it was a regular stop on the rock pub circuit, as the Foresters it served a great pint of Castle Eden. Unfortunately is was made into a trendy bar after that and became the York, and the Yorick. The red building in the background is part of the Central Fire station due to be demolished in 2008 as part of the New Retail Quarter ( Sevenstone) which will utterly transform this adjacent area of the town centre.
Talking about fire stations....

This building was originally a Central Fire Station. In 1998 it was first converted into a bar and became Bar Coast, a very busy town centre bar. It was taken over by Bungalows and Bears in 2006 a national bar chain. |

A new pub was built from scratch on west
street, opposite the Cavendish, near the top of Fitzwilliam road. Owned by The Wolverhampton and Dudley Brewery( Update - March 2008 now owned by barracuda Group ) A 1.4million pound development
October 2000 - The pub opens as the varsity A student oriented pub, at the time, one of a chain of
18, in university towns, around the country ( Update - March 2008 now 40 varsities in UK ).
Later the Slug and Fiddle on Ecclesall road also became a Varsity pub in the same chain. Although that one is more of a sports bar, which offers cheap and cheerful hearty pub meals, which to my mind are only spoiled by the racket of over enthusiastic football commentators and 300 big screens which you cannot avoid.
|
BIA|HOI ... The Buddha Bar 2008 - Thanks to Bulldozer for this Photo. This bar was originally an engineering company and you can still see a crane set into the roof when inside.

Jocosa 2008 - Thanks to Bulldozer for this Photo
Situated at 141 - 143 West street, back in the 1960s the main
part of the building (141) was an Antique Dealer, the next bit from the following
block (143) was a sweet shop but interestingly the two adjacent shops were a
cobblers and pet shop just as they remain 40 years later!
More recently in 2006 the premises was trading as a restaurant called The Continental
This is Muse in 2008. Thanks to Bulldozer for this Photo. Traditionally this pub was called the Mail Coach Inn for 200 years. For about a decade it was Scruffy Murphys, a fake Irish Bar. However, even a casual glance at the building confirms that it has a heritage as a coaching inn. If they cleaned up the frontage and window details it would look stunning. Listed as Mail Coach Inn in 1999.

Rise 2008 - Thanks to Bulldozer for this Photo.
I find this tragically sad to see this once legendary pub in this state. As "The Hallamshire" it had several internal rooms with a bar in the centre. Also on the first floor there was a concert room which was a regular venue for local live bands. when Pulp used to play there, a queue of hundreds of people could be seen snakeing down the road.
You can see the date 1903 set into the fake gable at the roof level.

Now the frontage has been cleaned up a little you can see the year 1903 above the doorway. It seems that despite efforts to discourage pigeons, with shelf spikes on the upper architectural features of the building, they still find it a popular place to land. The feature of a head at the top gable shows that the pub was originally built for Whitbread Breweries. |

The University Arms was originally a club for Sheffield University Staff. It became a pub in the 1990s called 197 Club. Inside you can see cloakrooms and other evidence of the place being some kind of gentlemen's club. Picture Taken 19th of April 2008. Around the back is a lovely mature garden which can be used in the summer, accessed through a modern conservatory.
The Harley was purely a hotel for most of its existence but since the 1990s the bar has been open to the public and nowadays it enjoys more of a pub like status, with regular live music and a busy timetable of events like quizzes and other entertainment. Close to Sheffield University, the Arts tower can be seen in the background of the picture. The Harley is still a hotel and the rooms are good value although due to the music and noise in the bar below they provide ear plugs in the guest rooms.
