The old streets in the
area are lined with large victorian villas. They are now filled with students
and renting tenants. For such a large area, there are surprisingly few
pubs.
Probably the fact that their are so many renting
residents, is the greatest reason why the large part of the area looks
a bit shabby. As the landlords tend to get away with minimal maintenance.
Abbeydale Cinema, Or properly titled The
Abbeydale Picture House - Often called " The Abbeydale ", this large
imposing building stands as a sad reminder of a different era, when Sheffield
Boasted 69 Cinemas! The Abbeydale was a massive suburban Cinema complex,
with seating for 1560, it had a cafe at balcony level, a ballroom and a
billiard hall in the basement, and facilities for putting on stage shows.
The cinema closed it's doors in 1975, but the ballroom was still in use
for regular dancing until it was taken over and the whole basement was
converted to a snooker hall and an office furniture showroom upstairs.
In 1991 this all came to an end, when the council pushed for the building
to be given grade II listing. When it was, the cinema part of the building
lost all it's value and severe planning restrictions were enforced, as
to its useage.
Now the downstairs is
Abbey
Snooker Club, and Bar Abbey. The upstairs is still empty, schemes
are constantly being dreamed up by enterprising people for it's use, and
immediately turned down by the planning authorities. People have tried
to get it opened as a nightclub, a mosque, a restaurant and a curry house.
Will it be empty for another decade? Hopefully
not, as it's potentially the most impressive building in the south of the
city.
The Broadfield is a real plus for real ale
fans, as there are always plenty of well kept ales, of all strengths. This
pub is a very busy and has a great atmosphere.
There are two sides, the left hand side is a good
pub, and the right hand side is called The Odd Life Bar, it has loads of
pool tables and sometimes loud DJ's music or a band is performing. This
side is frequented by younger drinkers and is often more raucous. It has
been there a long time, since around 1896.

The Brinkliffe Oaks ( often called the BRINKS )
is also a great pub, it has a very large function room upstairs called The Oak
Hill Suite, with a stage, a piano, and an adjoining lounge.
Downstairs their are three distinct areas and a large bar
in the centre. In the car park are the oak trees which give the pub and the
road it's name. The car park is very large because it used to be a bowling green,
and there is an excellent terraced beer garden. The pub has a good and well
kept selection of ales, and excellent restaurant facilities.
One end of the pub is quiet and has
lots of dining seating, and the other end has a juke box and pool tables, including
a funny shaped novelty one. This caters for both ends of the pub spectrum, and
it's quite common to see people having a quiet read in one end, completely undesturbed
by students playing pool and socialising at the other.
Update April 2007 The brinks has been earmarked for redevelopment
as flats, it stands boarded up and folorn, with barriers all around the carpark.
Apparently the pubs has been run down over the last couple of years and has
not attracted much custom. It will be another sad loss to Sheffield's traditional
pub scene.
The Bar Abbey, was previously The Speakeasy,
a gig venue, however it is now an underground bar that D.J's often play. They
have their own website www.sheffieldscene.co.uk/barabbey/index.html
