Night Clubs, Bars And Venues
In The Sheffield Suburbs
There are many notable bars, nightclubs and
venues that are further out from the centre of Sheffield, which add to
the local scene.
Bar Abbey
Abbeydale Road
Origionally part of the Abbeydale Cinema
Complex, this is a subterranean room which once was a snooker / billiards
hall next to the dance hall next door. In The 80's the whole downstairs
was converted into Drake's Snooker, and in the 90's Abbey Snooker, and
the old Snooker / Billiards room was developed into the Speakeasy Bar.
Many bands played in the Speakeasy, it was quite a good venue, but the
only problem is that the licence only allows members and their guests inside.
To become a member you need to present yourself at the door and give your
name and address, and they make you a card, which you can use from the
next week on.
The venue is now
called Bar Abbey, and you still have to be a member. The current adverts
promise :-
Friday - Lounge
- Varied Underground Sonics 8 - 11pm
Saturday - Network -
Djs from NySushi, Blueprint and Lounge
|
In the week the bar is just like a pub, with
good seating and Large projection tv.
Pulse & Vogue NightclubWith
Hotshots Pre Club Bar
Arena Leisure Park, Terry Street, Don Valley
Right out in Don Valley, between Sheffield
and Meadowhall. This large complex has big backing. There are reps in town
every Friday and Saturday night giving out flyers and there is a free bus
every 10 mins. Pulse is for over 18's, And vogue for over 25's. If there
wasn't a bus service, then the place would go bust.

The Players Cafe - January 2000
Supported by local celebrities, this venue was
supposed to be the Groucho club of the north. It failed after poor service
and remote location, left it high and dry.
Club Wow
Valley Centertainment Park,Broughton Lane,
Don Valley
Right out in Don Valley, Close to Brannigans.
The Deep End
Langsett Road, Hillsborough
The building was the old Hillsborough Baths,
where I learned to swim. But when they opened the large Hillsborough Leisure
Centre instead, they closed the old Hillsborough Baths. As well as the
25 yard swimming pool, there was also a number of " slipper baths ", which
were basically normal household baths, of the kind you would have in your
house nowadays, for some of the people of Hillsborough who didn't have
a bathroom, to have a nice soak, instead of a tepid splash in the old tin
bath in front of the fire in the back lounge with the whole family looking
on.
Now bands play in
this venue, and it has become a popular drinking den for the locals. They
have covered over the pool with a wooden floor, and the victorian fittings
are still in abundance everywhere. The building inside is almost unrecognisable.
The front is a large bar right along where the pay desks and other offices
and refreshment areas were. One of the old balcony staircases leads up
to a pool room with comfy seating and MTV television screens. And the live
band room is situated where the swimming pool hall was, the roof has been
lowered considerably, and the hall shortened with a false wall to about
a third of the swimming pool, the rest being unused at the back. There
is a great stage, very long and about 18 inches high, with a sticking out
round bit in the middle for the lead singer to stand.
The size of the
venue is perfect for live bands, and a good sound system is installed with
DJ booth as well as live band facilities.
Sunday afternoons & Tuseday Nights - jam
session, where anyone can take to the stage and play.
Brannigans
Valley Centertainment Park,Broughton Lane,
Don Valley
Boady american style bar where live entertainment
is always on the stage. Good quality food and service, regular proffessional
tribute bands are playing here in themed nights. High quality medium sized
venue.
