Jason is now the Landlord of the Dove and Rainbow. One of the Best Rock bars in town. In my view it is very like the old Wap atmosphere in there, with Classic Pinball machines and many of the old faces, but with far better drinks. They are a cask ale specialist and have won an award from the local branch of Camra. They also have a great sound system, and a stage for live bands, but are careful to maintain a good range of volumes, because so many people get put off from going into a music bar when it is too loud to talk. One of the best things they have in my opinion is a quiet end! Jason has just said to me " the Dove welcomes all of Sheffields old rockers at any time, for the best in classic rock, and where you will see all those long lost faces" |

1982 and 3, those long
Summer days in the Peace Gardens, getting thrown
in the fountain was an essential part of that Saturday experience...
drinking cheap cider from the 'International' supermarket opposite the
old bus shelters before hitting the Wapentake, Yorkshireman, etc,
followed by Rebels, and on Saturdays you were guaranteed to see
virtually every rocker in Sheffield descend on the Peace Gardens. Could
not move for denim jackets covered patches and embroidered logos of
Sabbath, AC/DC, Motorhead, Hawkwind, Rainbow, Whitesnake, Zeppelin, etc.
A few long gone relics here, note the old Peace Gardens bus shelters
with the old Church wall still there, the PIPPY'S bag, the HABITAT bag,
the famed Egg Box Town Hall extension, afghan coats, but quite how the
April 1983 Culture Club 7" single got to be in the picture I do not
remember!! Names of faces here include me, Joanne, Helen, Sonia, Cathy,
Chris, Brian, Julie, Angela, Nicky, Sharron, Richard, and if any of you
are still out there, drop me an email..( chestnutmare@imap.cc
) ..better still, you all took
pictures as well at various times so get them sent in! . . . . Jason

The
pub is THE YORK in Broomhill when it was still a proper old pub with vinyl
jukebox and pints of Carling Black Label at 50 pence, and fairly regular
haunt of a certain group of rockers on Sunday nights.. |
This next section
of images, courtesy of Jason are from Penthouse. |
Mike Redfearn has recently (1st Jan 2007) got in touch with us and added the following . . . "The band in the black and white picture at the Penthouse is called Friction and the year would be 1970 Also on stage with us is Pete Stringfellow - he'd just opened the place a short while before. The lead vocalist, the guy on the mike is Trevor Birch who went on to play with a band called, I believe, Iron Butterfly. He and I were very good friends - I have lived in Canada since 1974 - and we had a band called Chicago Line that was recently mentioned on the Sheffield Forum, on a 'bands of the sixties' thread. That would be around 1969. Ray Stewart got us the gig at the Penthouse and also got us into the Black Swan for the much covetted saturday lunchtime show. Friction didn't do a lot of work around Sheffield - we spent a lot of time up in Geordieland. We also had a band called The Shades of Blue and did a lot of business around the Chesterfield area."
|
Though unfortunately
damaged, this B & W photo is still worth publishing it shows a band
playing.
This Photo belonged to Mike Redfearn, He was the long haired bass player in the centre of the picture.

Here is another shot of that same Penthouse stage as the photo above, but this photo was taken on the club's opening day in 1969 As you can see from this image and the following ones as the club was in the Early 1970s the decoration was of ancient Greek motifs. The stage itself,
was the same wooden stage which was in situ when the club re-opened
as Rebels in January 1982 |
This shot shows the original DJ area, which appears to be on the left hand side of the stage. |

These photographs were
lent to Jason by PAUL NORTON,
who actually PAINTED the Penthouse interior murals himself under the direction
of a certain Mr Stringfellow in 1969...
he also did interior
design for the original MOJO club but thats some years before the penthouse....

And just a little further to the left we can see an Apollo Mural on the wall behind the seats. |
On the corner wall was another mural of a greek temple |

And finally in this Penthouse section we have photos of 2 images which were painted on the long stairs up to the entrance to the club |
Marsha Hunt - African American actress and singer who was famous for her role in the rock opera "Hair" as well as having Mick Jagger's first child
|
Julie Driscoll - British Singer and Actress, she had a hit with "wheels on fire" in the 1960s
