Roxy's Heavy Rock Night (Rock Night) was held in the night club which was originally the top rank, and later called Barry Noble's Roxy. The club was (usually) a large towny night club with lots of small dance floors and bars, on a mezanine floor, which looked down on the large dancefloor and stage. There was a large moving lighting gantry with fancy moving lights on it, which moved around all night to the music.
They used to have bands on sometimes, and there was a Miss Rock Night competition I remember too.
When it first started, the rock night was a really big event, and there were hundreds of people queing to get in, and the pub across the road, was full beforehand. I remember, almost everyone going there, even if it meant having the tuesday off work, to recover.
Towards the end I think they became less frequent as rock became less popular during the late 1990s and I remember the night being badly attended, and they stopped opening the upstairs of the club because of lack of demand.
You could get one of these cards by filling in a form. And you would get some tickets for a free bottle of champaigne style cheap drink on your birthday rock night, although I only ever saw the girls drinking it. The card enabled admission at half price. I remember getting leaflets and tickets through the door when there was another rock night due. |
