These shots are both from rebels, you can see the swirly pattern in the artex on the black wall behind |
This Shot is In Rebels in front of the cloakroom Window |
Here's Dom And A Mate At The Rebels Front Door |
Remember the arch over the old rebels bar and the vertical gold metal strips on the wall |

And here are two more rebels shots, you
can just see the tv in the background on this one. The tvs all around
the ceiling in Rebels were all playing reruns of the power hour, which
was an old rock video show which rock and metal fans used to record
in the middle of the night from the terrestrial tv station. These were
long before the multichannel days, when there was only 4 tv channels |

This shot of the Yorkshireman's Arms, was taken by Dom in
the recent past. The pub has for the past four years changed hands a number
of times, and empty. In the old rock days the place was legendary and
completely full, there was even the occasional gig in the backyard. There
were a couple of old dears trying to run it as a sort of tea shop 2 years
ago, that only lasted a few months. It struck me as tragic at the time,
I really felt that we'd lost something. The YA has been a rock pub, literally for decades I firmly believe that it will never be a success as anything else. With the revival of Rock in the past couple of years it should resume as one again.[steve] |

Not All Girls are quite what they seem, this one was a well known character in Roxy rock night and Rebels. She was competing in the Miss Rock Night competition. An excelent bloke from Rotherham - Andy Winsor once game me a tremendous bit of advice when I was a very young man, he said, "have a grope at her crotch and if it's any bigger than an onion . . . " [steve] |

Here is a shot of the Roxy Ramp of shame |
The front window afforded a clear view of the Roxy’s main entrance, which was handy for keeping an eye on the size of the developing queue and thus gauging what time to make a move over - it was crucial you arrived at the right time, get there too early and you risked looking seriously uncool, too late and you were stuck in the queue for ages. [Dom]

Before Roxy Rock Night, everyone met across in the Mulberry Tavern, where you could keep an eye on the queue on the ramp of shame, while having a few un watered down pints, and timing your admission to the Roxy. When you would go under the underpass or over the dual carriageway railings, depending on the weather. The Mulberry was an old pub that was cleared and rebuilt in the redevelopment of Sheffield in the 50s&60s the original frontage was reproduced in the present façade |
| Inside, The Mulberry it was always packed to the doors on a rock night, which was the first and third monday of every month | ![]() |
As for the pubs, there were four main watering-holes the rockers frequented. At the weekend and on some weekday nights it was the Yorkshireman’s Arms on Burgess Street or a subterranean bar called the Wapentake (the Wap - pronounced ‘Wop’ )[Dom]
This was the Wap at the door at the bottom of the steps |
And another Wap shot
|
This is all that is left of the old Wapentake Entrance, now part of the Casbah, the door now leads into the cloakroom, and is used as an emergency exit. The old Wap entrance was a plain window with a broad wooden bar across
it and a double door, it looked so unlike a bar that some people used
to call the Wap "The Chip Shop" |

The Mullet Rock Flyer From The Casbah The Wap was spruced up recently and is now a cheap and cheerful late-license joint called the Casbah. It still caters to pretty much the same crowd and for the first few months following it’s reinvention they used to run a night called ‘Mullet Rock: Hairstyle of the Gods’, which tickled me more than a little. I’ve always admired anyone with self-confidence enough to take the piss out of themselves. [DOM] |
