Sheffield Tower Blocks and High rise Apartments of the 20th Century

Sheffield has an interesting history of high rise living which stretches back quite a long way. In this selection I intend to present the remaining tower blocks and apartments which remain from the 20th century. Unfortunately there are only a small number left on the ground today.

1936 Regents Court - 1959 Twin Towers - 1959/61 Upperthorpe - 1961 Park Hill Park Hill pg 2 - 1962 Netherthorpe - 1963 Callow Mount - 1964 Lansdowne - 1965 Stannington - 1966 Hanover - 1966 The Fosters - 1967 chantrey

At high Green there is alittle known, early 1960s tower block called "The Fosters" and It is a right ugly monster.

Thanks to my Brother Nick for the Photos on this Page.

High Green is the most northerly suburb of Sheffield and is where local Band "Arctic Monkeys" are from.

It would be splendid to buy some food from "The Food Centre!"

The Fosters contains 34 apartments, each with 2 bedrooms. there are 10 floors in total, with a caretaker's flat and retail units on the ground floor.

Looking in through the door into the lobby, we can see two lifts.

It seems that the local authorities have been discussing for some time what to do about this tower. Here is a Sheffield City Council website which discusses this issue and gives a clue as to what might be happening here in the near future. - - - - The Future of The Fosters

Here is details of a previous refurbishment ( or proposed refurbishment ) from over a decade ago in the early 1990s. The block looked derelict in the first photograph.
